Episode 7.01: The Long Morrow
Airdate: Fall 2006
09/19 - Lorelai gets hit in the face and gets a black eye! But
don't worry--it's not a domestic dispute, but rather a racquetball
incident that happens when she and Rory hit the racquetball court
to try to get their minds off their troubled relationships. Also,
Christopher calls and asks Lorelai out!

09/14 - [Gilmore show-runner David Rosenthal reveals: Episodes] 1
and 2 are pretty continuous. We view them as a two-hour Gilmore
Girls movie. It's just a lot of emotional stuff that we're facing.
[There's a line in the first episode where Lorelai tells Luke it's
over.] Time has a way of healing. She means it, but is that the
case forever? I don't believe that. Do I think Luke and Lorelai
ultimately are soul mates? I do. I really do. But does that mean
they're gonna run off together tomorrow and live happily ever
after? No. But I think it seems like they're at a point where they
both have some regrowing and changing to do and some things to
figure out. It's over for now. Source: The Ausiello Report
09/14 - The seventh-season opener picks up where the last one
ended, with Lorelai in bed with Christopher the morning after her
argument with Luke. Now she faces the reality of her impulsive act
and her belief that the engagement is over. She spends time with
Rory, who is puzzled by a mysterious gift that Logan left her.
Meanwhile, Taylor has a red-light camera installed in front of the
diner, which leads to an accident that angers the already agitated
Luke. Gypsy: Rose Abdoo. Lulu: Rini Bell. Source:

09/11
- Picking up on the day after last season's finale, Lorelai wakes
up in bed with Christopher. Confused and mortified, she makes a
hasty exit, ignoring Christopher's pleas that she stay. Once at
home, Lorelai tries to get rid of everything that reminds her of
Luke and ends up practically emptying her house. Rory receives a
toy rocket ship as a parting gift from Logan and is baffled as to
its meaning. She decides she should join him in London for the
summer, only to learn he has bought her a ticket for a visit at
Christmas. Kirk and Taylor cause a bizarre accident that damages
Luke's diner. Finally, Luke shows up at Lorelai's door and asks
her to elope. Melissa McCarthy, Yanic Truesdale and Liza Weil also
star.

09/05
- The episode looked, sounded and felt like a typical hour of
Gilmore Girls. Actually, I would rank it up there with some of the
show's most entertaining episodes. The pacing and tone were what
we have come to expect — and love — and, despite all the sturm und
drang of the Luke/Lorelai/Christopher triangle, it was funny. Very
funny. At times, even hysterical. And there was also a fair share
of romance courtesy of Rory, Logan and a two-foot-tall rocket
ship. Any scene that ends with Babette explaining to Lorelai how
she'd like her "intimates" dried is a winner in my book. Paris's
SAT-tutoring business exceeded all of my comedic expectations.
When a mother of one of the control freak's potential pupils asks
why they both have to take a preliminary aptitude test, Paris
barks, "Basically, I need to know how much of this is her fault
and how much of it is yours." The funniest Paris line is also the
one most likely to fly right past you, so pay really close
attention. Taylor's decision to install a red-light camera to
catch lawbreakers leads to all sorts of frivolity, not to mention
one of the funniest Kirk sight gags ever. Although some of you
will likely groan at the mere thought of Lorelai and Rory playing
a sport, the Girls' racquetball game/exercise in distraction works
precisely because it is so preposterous. And if you had any doubt
whether Rosenthal could nail AS-P's signature prose, consider this
line, in which Rory tells Lorelai that there was nothing good
about her tearful good-bye to Logan: "It's a very poorly-named
ritual," she laments. "It was a bad-bye, very bad-bye." Speaking
of Rory and her beau, the aforementioned rocket was a gift from
London-bound Logan and is, initially, a source of great angst for
his favorite Girl. I don't want to reveal why, but I will say the
symbolic gesture ultimately brings them closer together than ever.
(Hint: It all goes back to the episode title, "The Long Morrow.")
Ironically, the weakest part of the episode was something boss man
Rosenthal likely had little control over: Lauren Graham's
emotionally guarded performance. Don't get me wrong, LG was at her
gloriously pithy best. [...] But much of the episode called for
Lorelai to be distraught over what she had done to Luke (i.e.
bedding Christopher), and, unfortunately, LG rarely gives you a
sense of that anguish. Lorelai behaves as if she had just broken
up with some poor schlub she dated for a few weeks — a Max, for
crying out loud — rather than the love of her life. The final,
heartbreaking scene should have torn Lorelai's insides up but
instead elicits little more than a frown. The way it plays, she's
not devastated, she pities Luke. Huh? Perhaps a line change in the
episode may shed some light on the show's direction this season –
and, possibly, the increased creative role LG has in this post-Palladino
era. In a telephone conversation with Christopher, Lorelai —
according to Rosenthal's original script — told her ex this "will
never happen again." This, of course, being the dirty deed. But on
screen, the line was delivered as, "I don't think it should happen
again."

7/14 - Paris starts a small business to help student prep for the
SATs. She meets a student named Kaitlin and her mother. After
being brutally honest about what she thinks of Kaitlin, she agrees
to help her study for the SATs. She then has the mother and the
daughter take an aptitude test to know what potential Kaitlin has
and what comes from genetics. At the diner, Luke is particularly
irritated especially when a customer tries to leave without paying
his bill. When Taylor's Thunderbird is stranded in front of the
diner, Taylor wants it to stay there until the insurance company
takes a look at it. Luke must decide if he wants it towed or not.
Being depressed and unsure, Luke can't make a decision. Source:

07/23 - The episode is going to be a tough
one for Luke and Lorelai fans to watch. Really tough.
[However,] the episode left no doubt in my mind that Lorelai and
Luke are meant for each other. And Logan and Rory fans will be
swooning as a result. Sure, the episode finds them on opposite
continents, but Rosenthal has found a way to bring them closer
together than I think they've ever been. All I'll say is his
method is sweet, utterly romantic, and it ties in with the episode
title, "The Long Morrow." And the end result should put Matt
Czuchry fans' mind at ease. (At least for the short term.) Rory
and Lorelai spend some quality time together at a *a*********
c****. There's a very silly subplot involving Michel,
Sookie and *r* ********g. Lorelai makes a passing reference to the
title of one of the best Gilmore Girls episodes ever. I was
left with the impression that there will be a significant time
lapse between Episodes 1 and 2. Emily, Richard, Lane, April and
Anna are MIA, but the rest of the supporting cast is pretty much
accounted for.

Michel are busy welcoming new guests at the inn. Michel is
irritated by the cheerfulness of the visitors. Rory is on a train
back from Providence. April gives Luke a bracelet. Later, Lorelai,
Logan, Rory and Michel, along with some tourists, go to Spring
Fling in a bus rented by the Inn. At the event, some Inn guests
are skeptical about a maze made out of hay. One kid is especially
not that excited because no one will chase him or shoot him with
water guns as he goes through the maze. Logan goes through the
maze with the kid. Babette, Morey, and Taylor also appear. Source:

02/12 - Matt Czuchry reveals: Logan is going to start a nice arc
here. There will be a further twist on down the line as far as the
direction that Logan’s going to go for the last chunk of the
season. So the internet company and how he interacts with his
passion and what happens with the internet company is really going
to inform the storylines for him and for Rory and their
relationship. Source: BuddyTV
02/07 - More family drama is headed Logan's way as Papa
Huntzberger rears his meddling head again. Rory plays the
supportive girlfriend, just as he played the supportive boyfriend
during Richard's health crisis. And that's it, really. No marriage
proposal or anything like that. Source: Ask Ausiello @ TV Guide
01/31 - Shortly after my item ran, a Gilmore insider,
confided to me that the engagement/pregnancy plot has been scaled
back. "They will not be that far along in a relationship by May,"
my spy revealed. "There will be progress, but she won't be
pregnant or engaged in the season or series finale — as of now."

01/25 - You may have heard TV Guide's report that Alexis
Bledel (Rory) does not want to continue Gilmore Girls and
that the CW is moving forward with the idea of doing the show
without her. Well, according to my sources—who are highly
placed within the Gilmore family—the plan of a Roryless
eighth season has been firmly rejected for one very good
reason: Lauren Graham is sticking by her onscreen daughter (you
gotta love that) and has made it clear that she will not
continue the show without Alexis on board. So... will we get
another season? Lauren and Alexis are making the decision as a
team. If they both decide to partake in an eighth season, we'll
get another year of Gilmore bliss. If not, this will be
the final year of the show we so adore. Still, don't start saying
your goodbyes just yet. The show's rep at the CW insists the
report that Alexis does not want to continue with the show
is "really just a rumor... I've never heard that from Alexis'
people or any reliable source close to the production." Plus,
there's another reason to hold out hope: I'm also told CW
president Dawn Ostroff isn't ready to let Lorelai and Rory
go—and is prepared to do "whatever it takes" to turn the show
around creatively and keep it around another year.

01/24 - They're dealing with [Melissa McCarthy's pregnancy] by
making Sookie pregnant for a third time. David Rosenthal is
seriously considering ending the season (or series?) with Lorelai
and Luke not only married but expecting a baby. The buzz in Stars
Hollow is that the key to an eighth season may rest in Alexis
Bledel's petite hands. Unlike Lauren Graham, who appears to be
somewhat amenable to the idea of continuing on for another year,
Bledel is proving a tougher sell. As a result, Warner Bros. and
the CW are allegedly developing a Plan B that would focus an
eighth season on Lorelai, Luke and their new baby, with the
occasional sweeps-month guest appearance by Rory. Source: Ask

01/24 - Lorelai will end her marriage with Chris. The latter won't
be happy about it. Lorelai will stay single for a little while.
Some people over at FanForum say that Luke will be quite impressed
with Lorelai's letter and that it'll make him see that he was good
enough for her.

11/15 - Rosenthal reveals: It's one thing to go off on this
romantic weekend and get married; it's another thing to actually
come back and deal with the reality of being married. Lorelai's
never lived with anyone. They've never really lived together. This
marriage puts a lot of pressure on them both. That's the big theme
for the latter half of the season for Lorelai and Chris, and for
Rory. She's facing graduation and her future, and she's always
thought, "Oh, I'm going to be a journalist." Rory's going to open
herself up to the possibility that there are other options out
there for her. She's never really considered anything else; now
she's willing to consider everything else. And there's the other
issue of Logan being back in New York. There are opportunities
that could pull her away from Logan. Suddenly, it's no longer a
college relationship. It's two people out in the world, so the
stakes become higher. [Logan's return] will kind of rev up their
relationship in good and bad ways. We're going to see their
relationship deepen and complicate in many ways. [Rory will not
find herself torn between Marty and Logan.] Marty's feelings for
Rory will really be the issue; it's not reciprocated. The man is
still holding a torch. It's something he just can't seem to let go
of, and it'll definitely cause problems. But there's nothing on
Rory's end. It's not her thing — it's his thing. Source: Ask

10/25 - Rosenthal reveals: Luke and Lorelai are right now on
separate journeys, but they are by no means forever separated.
They’re still very much a part of each other’s lives and will be
in the future in significant and profound ways. [highlight if you
want to be that spoiled... Lorelai coming back with a husband— and
not the husband they were expecting her to have — will have a
profound impact on everybody. [Luke's reaction will happen on
camera.]] No one's going to die in Stars Hollow. Source: The

09/28 - Rosenthal is working on securing a few famous names to
guest on the show. At the top of his list? Director Brian De Palma
— who’ll play himself. Rosenthal doesn’t think that the “Black
Dahlia” director would be the first guy’s guy to stop by Stars
Hollow, despite the “Girls” in the title. “I know a lot of men
will admit to watching our show only with their wives or
girlfriends or sisters,” he says. “Rarely will I get a man who
just admits he watches it by himself, but I know they do.”

09/20 - [David Sutcliffe] told me at Monday's launch party that
he's currently in talks "about doing a number of episodes in the
last nine." [This would make his stay longer than 13 episodes.]

09/14 - [Gilmore show-runner David Rosenthal reveals:]
There are so many ramifications [from the night Lorelai and
Christopher spent together], not only for Lorelai and for Luke,
but you know, for Rory and for Christopher. Something like this
sends shockwaves out, so there's a lot to deal with. There's still
obviously a lot of other fun stuff going on, but in terms of
emotionally, yeah, there's a lot of fallout. I also feel like the
first five or six episodes are really kind of setting Luke and
Lorelai on a course for the season. And it's gonna take a few
episodes for us to get them out at sea and on their journeys for
the year. [Luke and Lorelai] definitely are on separate journeys,
but their journeys will also intersect and overlap. It won't be
like Luke's over here and Lorelai's over there and never the two
shall meet... not at all. They're on their own journeys, but those
journeys will come together. [Christopher's a big part of [Lorelai's]
life and he's a big part of Rory's life. This past season he
really showed a different side, a more patient side, a more mature
side. And I feel like he's earned their trust in a way he really
hasn't before, and he's in their lives in a way he really hasn't
been before. [Lorelai and Christopher will] certainly [be back
together romantically], given what's happened... yeah. Absolutely.
[April and Anna will] absolutely [be part of Luke's journey].
Those relationships will continue to intensify. The Luke and
Lorelai relationship will impact [Richard and Emily]. They've
always been very conflicted about Luke and his role in Lorelai's
life. Also, Richard is going to be offered a guest lecturership at
Yale, so he'll be on campus and around Rory. Emily, as part of her
DAR work, is doing a little cotillion training for young girls.
She's running her own little etiquette school, which will be very
funny. I think it'll really be a great thing for her. There also
might be some health issues coming up this year [for Richard]. So
that's something that could impact them significantly in terms of
his work and also kind of Emily's role in his life and their
dynamic. I think health issues can create stress and conflict and
trauma in a family, but they can also bring the family together.
It can bring mothers and daughters close together and it can bring
grandparents and grandchildren close together. There will be
multiple babies born this season. There also will be a marriage.
Logan will be a major part of [Rory's] life this year, and they
will find ways to be together. [Marty] makes kind of a surprising
appearance when she's least expecting it. And whether
intentionally or unintentionally, he definitely stirs up some
trouble in her personal life in a big way. He really causes her a
lot of problems. Marty's grown up a little. He's developed a
thicker skin; he's a little tougher. He's not such a boy anymore.
His actions will definitely cause trouble in Rory's life. Mr. Kim
is a mystery. Perhaps one day that mystery will be answered, but
there are no plans now.

- Richard will get a teaching gig at Yale and Emily will start
training young girls in the fine art of etiquette. Later in the
season, Richard will face a medical crisis that show-runner Dave
Rosenthal says will have a "profound impact" on the entire Gilmore
clan. "Health issues can create stress and conflict and trauma in
a family, but they can also bring the family together," he adds.
"It's something that will affect not only Emily but Rory and
Lorelai, too."
